While watching episode 4, of Carl Sagan’s The Cosmos, I was intrigued by his talk of comet collisions. I find it interesting that the physical evidence of comets colliding with earth in the distant past have been erased front the surface as if it never happened. When a comet collides with a planet it leaves a bowl-shaped crater. The more recent collisions have been preserved fairly well, but for older collision sites these craters disappear from the earths surface. This is due to the craters being softened, filled, or rubbed out by natural erosion or other natural factors. What’s even more interesting is the fact that the moon doesn’t lose its craters because it has different natural conditions than earth. This is why some spots of the moon look darker than others.
